Blackburn Harriers turned in a most extraordinary performance in the final Mid Lancs Track and Field League meeting at Hyndburn, a competition which features both junior and senior competitors.

Neither the male or female teams had won a fixture this season, yet they both did on Saturday - and each with the highest scores recorded by any team in Division One this summer.

Even more amazing but, subject to confirmation, they have both snatched victory in the league with the males overhauling Blackpool and Fylde, and the females coming from third place past Preston Harriers and Blackpool.

Their success represents a transformation in their fortunes as both teams were promoted from the second division only 12 months ago.

Promotion has been on the cards for both of Rossendale Harriers' teams since the first of the five meetings, and they will win both second division championships after the females won again and the males were a close second behind hosts Hyndburn at Wilson's Playing Fields. Hyndburn males will also be promoted to Division One.

Blackburn Harriers won five of the eight 4x100m relay races. Sarah Henton and Naomi Thompson each won three events for the females.

Senior Sarah took the shot in 10.98m, discus with 41.82m and javelin 28.06m. Competing in the youngest Under-13 class, Naomi won the 200m and 800m in respective times of 29.7 seconds and 2:25.4, and the high jump with a clearance of 1.27m.

Pendle's Under-17s monopolised the throws with Stacey Cook taking the shot, discus and javelin with 9.73m, 26.41m and 23.09m backed by Sophie Hitchen with 34.09m in the hammer.

Seniors Sophie Hart and Vikki Grime provided the bright spots for Hyndburn's women with success in the 100m and hammer.

Second division Rossendale's Laura Briggs took the Under-15s 300m in 46.3 seconds while Dominic Walton won the Under-13s 800m in 2:21.9.

The senior 4x400m relay also went their way in 4:42.3.

Chorley Athletic Club has a small squad and is therefore perennially in the second division, but Kelly Hilton was outstanding with a clean sweep in the senior jumps - long 5.01m, triple 10.68m and high 1.58m.

Hyndburn's Stephen Sumner was first to cross the line in the senior 200m and 400m in times of 23.1 seconds and 52.2 seconds.

Burnley's Danny Eckersley's won the senior 800m.
