KYLE Lafferty has been brought back down to earth with a bump by Burnley boss Steve Cotterill.

The 18-year-old scored his first international goal - and the winning goal - for Northern Ireland against Finland on Wednesday night.

And although Cotterill praised his striker, the Burnley manager said the youngster's superstar status on the international scene counted for nothing as far as he was concerned.

And his midweek scoring exploits would not guarantee the teenager a starting slot against Wolves, despite first-choice Andy Gray being suspended.

Cotterill said: "I'm delighted with the goal for Kyle.

"Steve Jones one-on-one, he's beat his man and Kyle's come in at the back post and scored with a header.

"We're delighted with that, it'll only stand him in good stead for us hopefully.

"And it'll give him some confidence, not that he's short of it, he's quite a bubbly character.

"He's a good lad and he's very popular. You don't get many 18-year-olds doing well in the Championship or doing well at international level.

"But his goal makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

"He could've scored three and I was either going to play him or I wasn't and when the team sheet goes in at 2pm he'll either be on it or he won't be on it.

"You can't pick your team on what somebody does for their country.

"I focus on the things I see in training every day rather than what's happening outside of Burnley and I always would.

Lafferty, who spent some of last season on loan at Darlington scoring three goals in nine matches, gained plaudits from Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez after his 64th minute winning strike.

And Sanchez not only promised the teenager a place in his squad for next month's European Championship qualifier against Iceland but he also predicted a bright international future for him.
