STEVEN Fletcher scored twice and had a hand in Burnley's third, but there was little to celebrate for the Clarets as they shipped five for the second time this season, while captain Steven Caldwell was sent off in stoppage time.

The opportunity of a first away win slipped away in the first half, when slack defending gifted West Ham a 2-0 lead - with goals for Jack Collison and Junior Stanislas - before Carlton Cole provided extra breathing space from the spot on 43 minutes.

A goal for Guillermo Franco and another penalty, this time converted by subsitute Luis Jiminez, further increased the Hammers' lead soon after the hour.

But Burnley, who had failed to make the most of a bright start before conceding, incredibly caused tension among the home fans with a fightback in the final 25 minutes following a double substitution.

Christian Kalvenes replaced Stephen Jordan, who had been touch and go following illness in midweek, while David Nugent came on for Robbie Blake.

Within moments of his introduction, Nugent missed two good chances, before Fletcher finally pulled a goal back on 68 minutes from Eagles' pinpoint delivery.

The two combined again with 16 minutes to go, but despite West Ham jitters the damage had already been done.

Caldwell was shown a straight red card for hauling back Hammers substitute Zavon Hines, before Fletcher dummied Tyrone Mears' cut back for Eagles to finish in stoppage time.

Despite scoring three for the second consecutive away game, Owen Coyle's men left empty-handed.
