BURNLEY reserve team boss Steve Davis has hailed Fernando Guerrero as ‘almost unplayable’ after the Ecuadorian winger produced a lively display in a 2-1 second string win at Bolton Wanderers.

An experienced Clarets line-up came from behind to triumph in the Barclays Premier Reserve League (North) encounter at Leyland on thanks to a penalty from Steven Thompson and a late strike from 16-year-old Scottish striker Joe McKee.

Michael Duff, Christian Kalvenes and David Edgar were among those to play 90 minutes, while Guerrero was a constant threat on the flank.

“He was superb,” said Davis.

“If he gets a head of steam up he’s almost unplayable.

“He did really well and carved out two good chances and looked a threat all night.

“And I thought Steven Thompson led the line very well. He’s a big lad, a big handful and I thought his attitude along with Michael Duff, the more senior pros, was outstanding as it was with everyone.

“The players on the fringes of the first team do apply themselves really well and it’s testimony to them.

“Sometimes it’s not easy to come into reserve games but you’ve got to do it.

“Their attitude throughout the whole season has been first class and you expect that because at the end of the day they’re getting paid to play football and it’s a great opportunity - it doesn’t matter what level you’re playing at.

“But to be fair to them their attitude is outstanding.”

Asked about McKee, who was signed from Livingston in the summer, Davis added: “He’s come into the reserves and he’s done really well.

“He’s still a young lad and he looks comfortable at this standard of football, which is always a good thing for a young lad.”

The promotion of Burnley’s first team has meant a switch of leagues for the reserve team, too.

Davis said: “So far it’s been good. With a little bit of experience we’ve had in most of our teams in the games we’ve played, it’s probably showed but we’ve had to grind a few results out.

“We dug in at Man City and Sunderland and got good results. Obviously there’s a long way to go but 12 points from six games is good.”
