BARROWFORD’S Steve Wilkinson was organiser of the end of season North Lancashire Time Trials Association 25-mile event on the unforgiving A588 coastal road across Pilling Sands, near Cockerham.

Several of our East Lancashire cycling clubs use the promotion as their annual championship at the distance. Paul Warrener of the Rossendale Road Club clocked 58 minutes 36 seconds to claim his own club’s title with second best Rossendale rider Derek Schofield in 1 hour 1 minute 14 seconds and Julian Monk third Rossendale in 1-04-55.

Ian Cox, a first-year racing member of the North Lancs Road Club, took his club’s championship in 59-46, beating the one hour exactly ride of Rob Dickinson into second with Dave Hargreaves 1-01-52 third.

Of our other local riders, Nathan Smedley of the Nelson Wheelers was fastest of his club in 1-02-22, with Peter Heywood second in 1-02-33 and Rab Marshall third with 1-06-27.

Martin Brass was the only Pendle Forest rider to ride, finishing in 1-04-38.

Fastest ride from the 100 entrants on the day was Derek Parkinson of the Cleveleys Road Club in 56 minutes 29 seconds.

The previous day, but on the much faster A50 road near Uttoxeter, Warrener had gone over five minutes faster in a personal best time of 53-19 but was beaten by three other East Lancs riders in the field of 120, Simon Wilson, of Worsthorne, clocked 51 minutes exactly, while Michael Ellerton of Burnley finished in 52-00 and Jason Bateman of Pendle Forest in 52-20.

This event was won by top rider Matt Bottrill in 48-59.
