Lancashire county cricket club has announced that Derbyshire bowler Tom Lungley will join the Cclub on a four-week loan to cover a growing injury list.

With Glen Chapple (stress reaction), Sajid Mahmood (intercostal strain), Tom Smith (abdominal strain) and Steven Cheetham (ankle complaint) all sidelined with injuries, and both Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson on England duty, Lancashire have been forced to look outside the core squad for an experienced bowler to bolster the county’s attack during an important stage of the season.

The 30-year old Lungley, is available immediately and could make his Red Rose debut today when Lancashire meet Durham at Old Trafford.

Cricket director Mike Watkinson said: “Injuries are a part of sport, but to have the majority of our bowlers in the treatment room at the one time is extremely unlucky. “We have played a lot of cricket this season and have some big matches coming up over the next few weeks, so we’ve had no option but to look outside our ranks for personnel. Fortunately for us, Tom was available and I’d like to thank John Morris at Derbyshire for agreeing to release him to us for this period.

“Tom is an experienced bowler who has a good track record in county cricket and will be a welcomed addition to the Lancashire squad for the next month.”

Meanwhile, coach Peter Moores has named Lungley in a 13-man squad to play Durham.

Paul Horton and Steven Croft also required treatment during the Championship match at the Rose Bowl – although both have been cleared to play this week. Wicket-keeper Luke Sutton will continue to captain the side in place of Earby’s injured Chapple.

In better news for Lancashire, against Hampshire, the club amassed their highest total (568 runs) in four years and secured maximum bonus points in concessive fixtures during that draw.
