MORE than 600 new jobs have been created and another 858 safeguarded thanks to a Burnley Council grant scheme, bosses at the authority have claimed.

The project was set up in April 2001 to help businesses develop their use of new technologies.

And since then the grants for ICT, technology and innovation scheme has boosted the technology industry in the town.

Now regeneration chiefs are looking for even more companies to take advantage - creating and securing even more jobs.

Burnley Council secured £1.5million from both the Government's Single Regeneration Budget and European funding to help develop businesses through the use of new technologies, encouraging them to be more innovative in the use of new products and systems.

The project has to date helped more than 120 Burnley businesses to design, develop and purchase the latest high-tech equipment in order to become more competitive in the UK and global marketplace, bosses said.

Coun Martin Smith, Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development said: "This project has been a major success and an important boost to Burnley's economy, helping to create higher skilled jobs, and improve the competitiveness of our local businesses. Companies have developed new websites, purchased new equipment, and received research and development consultant support.

"Funding under this programme is available until March next year and I would encourage local manufacturing and related businesses to enquire about eligibility as early as possible for this final year of ICT funding.

"The council is working hard to secure further funding to continue its support to local businesses after this particular funding programme ends."
