ROSSENDALE and Darwen MP Janet Anderson has backed a new Parliamentary bill dubbed the "power to the people" bill.

Campaigners say The Sustainable Communities Bill is about giving power back to local communities and saying goodbye to "ghost town Britain".

It is in response to the closure of thousands of post offices, bank branches, independent shops, pubs and newsagents across the country.

The Local Works, the group leading the campaign to pass the private member's bill, which will see local people given more say on local issues, congratulated the MP for joining with over 330 other MPs in support.

Janet Anderson said: "I am concerned by the decline in my constituency and across the country of basic facilities such as post offices, newsagents and bank branches, small shops and public facilities which communities vitally need.

"The bill provides a bottom-up way forward. It will give power to my constituents in their efforts to protect and enhance their communities and I will do all I can to help this vitally important Bill become law."
