HYNDBURN Council has vowed to continue to clampdown on littering in the borough after announcing that it had fined shoppers and motorists for dropping cigarette ends.
Enforcement officers issued two £75 on-the-spot fines last week in Broadway in Accrington for the offence and also caught a motorist in Eastgate.
The littering offences were witnessed by council officers from environmental services, who along with police patrolled the town centre on the look out for "litter bugs."
Coun Peter Clarke said: "This is just the beginning. The council is serious about keeping the borough's streets free of litter.
"We're urging smokers to act more responsibly with their cigarette ends by stubbing them out and putting them in the bin.
"We want people to think twice."
