AN Accrington Pal will return from the past to tell people about life in the front-line trenches.

Scott Knowles, whose grandfather served with the Pals, will be donning a reproduction uniform and carrying authentic World War I equipment as part of a drop-in family history session at the town's Haworth Art Gallery at 2.30pm on Thursday.

The sessions, run by local historians Helen Barrett and Walter Holmes, allow visitors to find out more about what their own family members were doing during the First World War.

Art gallery manager Jennifer Rennie said: "Scott is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the Pals and is set to really bring history alive for our visitors."

The session is part of the gallery's "Our Dear Pals" season, which started on July 1, to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Other activities at the Haworth include children's workshops, guided tours and a special lecture "The Somme, 90 years on".

The fighting at the Somme wiped out many men from the Accrington, Burnley and Chorley "Pals" battalions and became a defining event of the Great War.
