DETECTIVES are launching a poster campaign in a bid to catch the hit-and-run driver who killed a seven-year-old girl.

Officers were today putting the finishing touches to the leaflets, which will appeal for information about the motorist who left Olivia Whiteside for dead.

Olivia, of Gold Hey Street, Blackburn, was playing with her cousin while staying with her aunt when she was struck by a vehicle at the junction of Billinge Street and Dalton Close, Audley, on Thursday July 27.

Police believe the car was a black 4x4 but have been unable to trace the driver.

Officers fear that the motorist maybe being shielded by friends in the community where the accident happened.

They have already carried out door-to-door inquiries at every house in the neighbourhod without finding the information they were looking for.

As a result, officers are mounting a further bid for information with the leaflets.

They will be produced in English and another language, possibly Urdu, and will be distributed to every home.

The leaflets will also be put on display in prominent places in the community.

It is hoped the move will further encourage someone who has vital information to come forward.

Det Insp Dave Hickey said they were hoping to have the leaflets ready later this week. He added: "We don't know what form they will take yet as we are still drawing them up.

"We will be leaflet dropping homes in the area and also putting them up in community bases.

"I would urge anyone with information to come forward and help us. This can also be done anonymously through Crimestoppers."

Six people have already been arrested in connection with the incident. Four of those were taken in for questioning shortly after Olivia's death and released without charge.

The remaining two men, who were arrested last week on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, were released on bail pending further inquiries.

People can call the police on 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with information.
