A FATHER of five who attacked his wife because Ramadan may have made him short tempered has been given 12 months community supervision.

Mubarik Ali, 66, repeatedly slapped the victim as she lay in bed. His wife banged her head on the radiator during the assault, Burnley magistrates heard.

Ali, of Hawk Street, Burnley, admitted common assault on October 25.

David Macro, prosecuting, told the court the victim no longer shared a room with her husband and was asleep in another room. Ali appeared, shouting at her to get up and she told him to go away and sleep.

Ali then hit his wife, still shouting at her to get up. The couple's 19-year-old son pulled his father off his mother. Police were called and the defendant was arrested. He threatened the victim as he was taken away.

Mr Macro said the victim suffered bruises and swelling, a cut lip and a scrape on her chin. She had not wanted the case to proceed as she and the defendant were back together and there had been no further trouble.

Basil Dearing, defending, said: "It's perhaps a case when people as a result of fasting and other matters associated with Ramadan are a little more short tempered than they might normally be."
