PLANS to turn a run down terrace in Nelson into a flagship design project have taken a step forward despite concerns about the scheme.

Nelson architect John Clancy, a co-opted member of Nelson Committee, claimed the designs on behalf of Adactus Housing Group for seven empty properties in Every Street would cause structural problems.

English Heritage, amenity groups and Whitefield Conservation Action Group have also expressed reservations.

But Nelson councillors have voted through the plans, on condition Whitefield Regeneration Partnership is consulted about materials, in hope the project will breathe new life into Whitefield.

Mr Clancy said: "This is the most appalling example of doing anything for the heritage of this town I have ever seen. As an architect, I say the things will fall down."

But planning manager Neil Watson and Executive Director (Regeneration) Brian Cookson questioned the plans.

Mr Watson said: "I would take issue with him Mr Clancy about the nature of the scheme

"English Heritage is happy with the revised scheme and updated materials.

"The internal alter-ations are not relevant."

The scheme involves six houses and a shop which would be incorporated into one of the houses.

Backyard walls would be replaced with wooden fences and the side boundaries reinstated.

Repairs are also proposed, including making two dwellings into one, reinstating front garden walls, replacing windows and doors, timber decking and internal works.

A wind turbine would go behind number 114.
