Andrew Flintoff's Sports Personality of the Year award has been greeted with delight at his home county Lancashire.

The 28-year-old all-rounder secured the accolade as a result of his heroics in England's Ashes success over Australia.

And Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes believes Flintoff's rise to fame and glory is richly deserved.

"From his early days with England, he was focused on making it to the top as an international cricketer, but success has not changed him as a person," said Cumbes. "He remains the same likeable character that he has always been.

"Lancashire have granted him a testimonial in 2006 and we wish him every success."

Old Trafford manager Mike Watkinson added: "We are all made up for him. He has worked hard for everything he has achieved and his impact last season will always be remembered."

Flintoff's wife Rachael and parents Colin and Susan were in the TV audience who saw the all-rounder crown a memorable 2005.

And the man-of-the-moment did not forget to pay tribute to those closest to him as he received his award in Pakistan.

"I thank my parents for their love and support, and my wife Rachael and daughter Holly - who have to bear the brunt when things aren't going well for me," he joked
