DAVID Thompson has agreed to play the waiting game as he prepares for a return from his long term injury lay-off.

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes insists that the midfielder won't be rushed back too soon, as has been the case on previous occasions since his knee injury problems began two years ago.

Thompson wasn't included in the squad for Tuesday's Carling Cup tie at home to Leeds United as Hughes wants to make sure he takes no gambles on his fitness.

The 28-year-old revealed last week that he's over the worst of his knee trouble and is ready to come back, but is now carrying out his manager's wishes to establish the required level of match fitness.

"We're looking to build Tommo's fitness up because when he does come back it's important that he's fit and well and able to make an impact," said Hughes.

"I think in the past he's been so keen to come back and give me an option that he's come back too soon.

"That's just because he loves playing football and he wants to be involved.

"But I've discussed it with him and I think it's better he gets a really good level of fitness before he starts to put himself up for selection.

"We'll benefit from that and certainly Tommo will as well and he's of the same mind as me now.

"He knows he's missed a lot of football and a lot of training and his fitness levels aren't what they need to be.

"But he's very close and playing really well in training. He looks as good as I've seen him but it's a case of just holding him back for his own benefit."

Thompson played in Rovers Reserves' 3-0 win at Liverpool last night, and impressed.

Hughes, however, has midfield options going into this weekend's daunting trip to Chelsea, particularly in Thompson's preferred position on the right side of midfield.

In Hughes's only unforced change to the team, Brett Emerton replaced David Bentley in that slot against Leeds on Tuesday and he responded with his first goal of the season to set Rovers on their way to a 3-0 victory.

"What we are saying to players is when you get the opportunity try to take it and be ready to take it," said Hughes.

"Everybody that gets a chance has to be in the right physical condition and have the right attitude mentally to make an impact and Brett did very well so credit to him

"I was pleased for him. He was positive in everything he did and had a real effect on the game."
