MIDFIELD battler James O'Connor has urged Burnley to overcome their Carling Cup disappointment and take a giant leap up the Championship table tomorrow night.

Victory over newly-promoted Hull City, in only the second home game in a month, would allow the Clarets to steal a march on their rivals and jump six places, albeit before the weekend fixtures.

However, with rock-bottom Millwall next up at Turf Moor on Tuesday, Steve Cotterill's side have a huge incentive to make it 'home sweet home' over the coming days.

And O'Connor believes the time is right for Burnley to pick up where they left off at Villa Park and firmly embed themselves in the top half of the table.

"Playing at Aston Villa was a nice change for us and if we could have just gone to extra time you never know what might have happened, but with a game tomorrow, I suppose not having extra time was a bonus," insisted the Dubliner.

"Obviously we were disappointed to lose, but the league is what's important. We've been a bit up and down, but if we had won at Crystal Palace last weekend we would have been in the top half.

"That's where we have to aim to be and obviously Friday would put us there, even for a few hours, so a win against Hull is in the uppermost of our minds.

"We have two massive games at home now before we go to Luton. But first we have to look to tomorrow and try to do ourselves justice and get that win.

"Fingers crossed if we put in that same effort and commitment we can do it."

The Clarets will be glad to be back on home soil after clocking up more than 1,000 miles in a week with away games at Leicester City, Palace and Tuesday's heartening performance at Villa Park.

And with another scheduled two-week break coming up following next weekend's tricky trip to high-flying Luton, due to the World Cup play-off matches, O'Connor knows the Clarets need to make the most of their home advantage.

He added: "It's been a tough little spell on the road and we know we have another break just around the corner, but nobody is looking beyond Friday and a good performance.

"Hull will be a difficult team to play against and you can't tell anything right now by a team's league position. It's a funny division because who would have said Luton Town would be third? So we won't take Hull lightly, that's for sure."
