DAVID O'Leary has called on his side to match Burnley's "hunger" and avenge last season's Carling Cup defeat.

The Villa boss went on a spying mission to watch the Clarets beat Leicester City in the Midlands a week ago - and saw enough to convince him the Premiership side are in for another tough night.

But with Europe and a Cardiff final on his mind, O'Leary is demanding total effort and commitment as he looks to right last year's wrong.

"I hope we are not complacent again," he said. "But apart from complacency last year, we also played against a hungry team.

"Burnley had another scalp after they beat us when they knocked out Liverpool. I saw them against Leicester last week when they won 1-0 through Ade Akinbiyi, so we've got a hard game."

Villa have won just once in nine games at Villa Park and will see the Carling Cup as a welcome distraction from their inconsistent league form.

O'Leary, whose side won 8-3 at Wycombe in the previous round, added: "Everybody is saying how important it is to have a Cup run because it is a chance of going well.

"We are taking the Carling Cup seriously and we won't be leaving people out."
