RESIDENTS who feared their post office would close when the building was knocked down are celebrating after being told it is to move 100 yards away.

Sunnyhurst post office is situated in Harwood Street, at the top of Crewdson Street, Darwen.

It moved to the site after the closure of Sunnyhurst Lane Post Office in January 2001 and was taken over by current owner Tariq Hasan.

But plans by Blackburn with Darwen Council to regenerate the Harwood Street area, as part of the Elevate East Lancashire housing programme, mean the existing post office and shop will eventually close.

Residents are now being asked for their opinions on plans to replace the existing building, currently subject to a compulsory purchase order by the council, with a new post office in Hindle Street.

Peter Mylchreest, head of network change at for Post Office Ltd said: "We're determined to safeguard post office services for the area in the long term, which is why we're planning to relocate the branch.

"The move would also bring significantly enhanced facilities, including a new, serving counter within a convenience store and flat-level entry for easier access for customers with mobility constraints."

After the closure of London Terrace and Hollins Grove sub-post offices, Sunnyhurst ward councillor Dave Hollings said it was good news there would still be a post office in his ward.

He added: "It is very important that the post office remains in that community and I am pleased that the current owner has decided to continue.

"A new premises is being built and hopefully this signals a long-term commitment to the area."

Nadia Bull, 23, of Grafton Terrace, said: "I think it's good we're not losing the post office because the next nearest one would be in the town centre which is always really busy. I often use the Sunnyhurst Post Office and it is really friendly. It is also handy because it is a convenience store."

Alan Southworth, 63, of Barley Bank Terrace, said: "A lot of people use the post office and the shop is always well-stocked. My wife won't use the town centre post office because it's too busy."

People are being invited to send their comments to Post Office Ltd National Consultation Team, PO Box 2060, Watford, WD18 8ZW. before November 18.
