VANDALS daubed a war memorial with obscene graffiti hours before Sunday's Remembrance Day parade.

But thanks to the efforts of a council team the monument was cleaned up in time for the Golborne tribute to the war dead to get underway without a hitch.

A council spokesman said: "This sort of action is appalling at any time of the year but at this time of year it is even more disgusting."

"The memorial was attacked overnight on Thursday and was discovered on Friday morning. Obscene remarks had been written in wax crayon and felt pen and dirt and footprints on the memorial indicated that the vandals had climbed on it.

"Thankfully the words were easy to remove and we inspected the area on Saturday and Sunday to make sure that everything was in order."
