IT may have been the coldest day of the season so far when Bury's youth team travelled to Burnley on Saturday, but they came home with a result to warm their hearts.

Luke Horrocks found himself in the right place at the right time to net the Shakers' only goal in a 1-0 win over the mid-table Clarets.

Head of Youth Neil Hanks was delighted that, for once, his side found a little bit of luck when they needed it most, with Horrocks scoring a rarity as far as the youth team goes 'a poacher's goal'.

"Normally when we score, we score really good goals," explained Neil.

"We haven't scored any really lucky goals until now. The ball broke for Luke and whereas in weeks gone by his looping shot would have floated over the bar, today it dipped just at the right time."

Hanks was also impressed with his side's defending, adding: "It was a solid display overall, particularly from the back three and the goalkeeper, helping us to our second clean sheet of the season.

"It was an excellent effort as the lads were not only under pressure from their opponents, but also from the conditions as there was a biting strong wind which made things very difficult at times."

Another man who was impressed with the defending - and with experience of playing at the back for Manchester United and Reading so he should! - was youth team coach Chris Casper.

He said: "I think we well deserved our victory, as the lads were outstanding.

"It was a hard game with Peter Collinge having to make some world class saves, and because it was so tight it was a real test for our defence.

"As a defender, its almost better to win 1-0 than 2-0 from a mental point of view because when there's only one goal in the game you have to keep on your toes.

"You can't afford to relax as you may do when you've got an extra couple of goals cushion."

Bury have been handed yet another chance to test themselves against top side

They will travel to face the Latics in an away clash for the third time this season next month, albeit this time in the top surroundings of the JJB Stadium.

The game will be held on Wednesday, December 17, kick off TBC.
