HULL opened the scoring with a neatly worked penalty corner strike after a period of sustained possession.

This was Preston's wake-up call as the burly Australian, Blanchfield, returned to the Hull D with a bustling run and shot, which ended with the ball looping over the goalkeeper and into the goal.

Hull rallied and won a penalty stroke shortly before the interval, after Ben Honour was left with no alternative other than to chest the ball off the line. The flick was dispatched high beyond Simon Eccleston's outstretched glove.

Fletcher flicked home from his trademark penalty corner routine, then moments later, Adam Wilson steered in the third from a Don Cock reverse-stick pass. Watson and Jim Blackburn indulged then set up Blanchfield for his second with a close-range finish.

With Hull committing men forward Preston unleashed a wickedly fast counter-attack, which left Wilson with two men and the keeper to beat before scoring.

Preston moved up to second behind Brooklands Manchester University 2nd XI, their opponents on Saturday at West Cliff.
