HUNDREDS of shoppers and residents turned out for the Christmas lights switch-on in Accrington last night .
The crowds packed in front of the Town Hall and queues stretched to Broadway and Union Street.
They were treated to a bumper pre-Christmas bonanza which included street entertainers and bands.
Children's television personality Leigh Morrison helped Mayor of Hyndburn Coun Win Frankland flick the switch for the annual ceremony.
The event also marked the start of late night Christmas shopping on Thursdays in the run-up to the festive season.
There was also a huge fireworks display from the roof of the Arndale Centre after the switch-on.
Inspector Phil Cottam, Accrington's police commander, said: "I was impressed with the number of people there.
"It was certainly full in front of the town hall and round the corner.
"Everybody seemed to have a good time."
