DISMAL Blackpool slumped to their fifth home defeat of the season, with manager Steve McMahon admitting he is baffled by his side's terrible Bloomfield Road form.

Tuesday night's game finished 1-0, thanks to a towering header from Wrexham's giant defender, Dennis Lawrence, but it was no more than the visitors from North Wales deserved after dominating much of the match.

Pacy Hector Sasm always looked threatening against a Blackpool defence which was missing Steve Davis, another flu victim. Fortunately, the Trinidadian ace didn't have his shooting boots on, or it could have been a rout.

Scott Taylor had the Seasiders best chances, but one close range effort in each half was scrambled clear by experienced keeper, Brad Jones.

The introduction of Richie Wellens -- only fit for half an hour after his bout of flu -- livened the Seasiders up a little, but he struggled to get in to the game against a competitive Wrexham side, recovering from four straight defeats.

Blackpool have now wasted their game in hand, making Saturday's match against Chesterfield a must win if the Seasiders are going to climb away from the relegation zone.

Pool comfortably avoided an FA Cup giant-killing against spirited Boreham Wood at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

The Rymans League side came out of the blocks like a house on fire early on, and could have had a penalty when the ball appeared to hit Chris Clarke's hand while he attempted a sliding clearance. Referee Eddie Evans decided it was ball to hand and showed admirable consistency by not pointing to the spot for a similar incident in the Boreham Wood area later in the game.

Blackpool went ahead on 12 minutes when two visiting defenders attempted to challenge big John Murphy in the air. Murphy managed to flick on to Taylor, who took the ball into the area for goal number 13 of the season.

A second came moments later, when Boreham defender, Daniel Braithwaite, got the ball stuck under his body.

The persistent Murphy slipped the ball to Danny Coid who struck his first of the season.

Coid almost added a third with a well-struck shot which Noel Imber palmed away to Murphy, who hit the bar from a tight angle.

Boreham Wood always looked lively -- with midfielder and convicted football thug, Veli Hakki, coming closest with a superb lob which had to be tipped over by Phil Barnes.

Strikers, Joe Baker and Sam Winston, also looked lively, but couldn't find a way past Steve Davis and Chris Clarke. Mike Sheron, played in a deeper than usual role to compensate for the absence of Richie Wellens, also had a couple of decent chances after the break, but it was in the dying seconds that the third finally arrived.

Keeper, Noel Imber, dropped the ball at the feet of Taylor who gratefully rolled the loose ball into the net.

And substitute, Jamie Burns, completed the scoring two minutes into injury time with an impressive long range effort.

Blackpool have been given two tough cup draws in Greater Manchester as a reward for last week's victories.

Steve McMahon's men go to Stockport County as they continue their bid to win the LDV Vans Trophy for the second time in three years.

The game at Edgeley Park is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9. In the second round of the FA Cup, Blackpool go to Boundary Park to take on Oldham Athletic on Saturday, December 6.

Pool have already won at both grounds in the league this season.

Steve McMahon has dismissed rumours that Richie Wellens could be heading to first division side, Rotherham.

Wellens, who has put in some fine performances this season, had been linked with the Millers, who are desperate for reinforcements as they struggle to climb the first division after a disappointing start to the season. However, McMahon said bluntly: "Richie is going nowhere.

"I don't know who starts these rumours but it is pathetic."

Wellens missed Saturday's game with flu.

There were mixed FA Cup fortunes for locally-based Pool old boys, Phil Clarkson and Andy Gouck in the weekend's cup ties. While Clarkson's Lancaster City side were unlucky to bow out at home to Cambridge, Gouck scored an injury time wonder goal seconds after coming on as a substitute for Accrington Stanley against Huddersfield Town.

Millions of viewers saw the former Seasiders ace win the tie for Stanley, barging a defender out of the way before hitting a magnificent dipping half-volley to win the tie in injury time.
