BORED youngsters need no longer hang around bus shelters or congregate outside off-licences now that they have a £200,000 new state-of-the art centre to use.

The Y Zone in Westminster Avenue was officially opened on Saturday (Nov 8) and replaces the former Radcliffe Youth Centre.

Bury South MP Ivan Lewis performed the unveiling ceremony and said: "The impressive refurbishment represents a commitment by Radcliffe councillors to provide modern, high quality facilities for young people in Radcliffe."

The centre will, at times, also be used by pensioners. Mr Lewis said: "By bringing young and older people together the Y Zone will also help to break down the barriers which too often create tensions between the generations."

Nine-year-old Lucia McGuinness, of Turks Road, had the distinction of naming the building. A panel of judges thought her suggestion was the most suitable from all those put forward in a competition.

During Saturday's grand opening, people were able to sample what the new centre has to offer and enjoyed taster sessions in everything from dance tuition and tennis coaching to making their own CDs.

Tracy Kyle of Asda Radcliffe also popped in to present the centre with a £250 donation from the store.

It took six months to revamp the centre and fit a new kitchen, an extra office, disabled facilities and Internet access. The overhaul also means it can extend its range of activities to include advice and information on young people's issues, learning opportunities, social events and project work involving art, drama and music.

Staff are determined as much use as possible will be made of the Y Zone and this is reflected in the changed opening times which means there will be daytime, twilight, evening and weekend sessions.
