OB-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Call Up The Groups, Silence Is Golden and You've Got Your Troubles -- just some of the great hits of the '60s that will grace the stage at Bolton's Albert Hall next week.

And, what's more, they're not being warbled by some second rate tribute band, but performed by the original groups that made them famous four decades ago.

Appropriately named, the show Call Up The Groups features the Barron Knights, The Tremeloes, The Fortunes and Marmalade all together on one stage.

Pete Langford, of the Barron Knights, explained: "The reason I wanted all these bands on the show was because there is a lot of talent in these groups the public hasn't seen.

"All the drummers have great vocals, so we bring them out to the front to sing in harmony while we back them.

"It's a great show and the reaction is unbelievable."

The audience's ages, according to Pete, range from 25 to 65. He admits he was surprised at how enduring the music is proving.

"Nobody realised how big '60s music was going to become at the time," he said.

"There was a way of writing songs, with a couple of verses and a big sing-along chorus, that has become standard now.

"A lot of the audience know every word we've ever sung. There's so many great songs that were massive hits.

"There were at least 35 chart successes between these groups.

"It's not often you can sit down in a concert hall and hear the original guys singing the original hits."

Pete penned a few original hits himself, not least the show's title number.

He said: "The Barron Knights were a vocal harmony band.

"I just sat down one day and wrote Call Up The Groups on the kitchen table at home.

"Then a Rolling Stones publicist heard it and said we should release it.

"It made number two in the charts and sold 500,000 records.

"We were gobsmacked!"

Pete, 60, was born in Durham, before he and his mum moved to Leighton Buzzard to escape the bombing of Sunderland during World War Two.

Since then, he admits, he has led a privileged life and enjoys the fact he can continue performing.

"Last year we did a 55-date tour, this year it's 42 dates," he said.

"I really enjoy it. It's a different type of '60s show, because we try some new tricks, but we still play all those great old hits."
