PLANS to give birth in Queens Park Hospital surrounded by midwives went out the window when 23-year-old Kelly Walsh gave birth to her second child -- on her mum's living room floor.

Her teenage sister even had to make the delivery while being talked through the process by an expert on the end of a telephone line.

Kelly, who lives in Accrington, was due to give birth on October 20 on her second wedding anniversary but had no signs of movement until six days later.

As she was visiting her mum Margaret and 18-year-old sister Catherine, in Winmarleigh Walk, Blackburn, she suddenly went into labour.

Her baby son Levi decided he could wait no longer and arrived so quickly there was no time to get to the hospital so the responsibilty of delivering the baby fell on Margaret and Catherine.

Catherine said: "I was watching the TV with my nephew and my boyfriend Kev was talking to Kelly in the kitchen. She just suddenly said her waters had broken. She said she had been walking about a bit during the night with back pains but there was no other warning. She got on the settee and everything happened so quickly. Fifteen minutes after coming out of the kitchen she had had him. It was so quick.

"I rang 999 and this woman was talking me through it. Me and my mum got her on the floor in the living room and I put some cushions under her. My mum went down the street where we knew a nurse lived but she was ill so couldn't help us so we just had to do it ourselves.

"We were both panicking that something might go wrong but Kelly was quite calm. I was told to go and get some towels and I had to tell Kelly to breath and not push or the baby might come out too quickly.

"My mum made sure the umbilical cord was not round the baby's neck but he was fine. The ambulance arrived just after it he came out so luckily they were able to take over. It was scary but I think I feel closer to Levi than my other nephews because of it. He is brilliant."

Kelly, whose husband Andrew, 32, did not arrive until all the commotion was over, already has a three-year-old son Dylan.

She said: "I wasn't scared and I didn't have any pain. I think they were more concerned than me. I was okay and Levi was perfectly fine. I had a bit of back pain the night before but I wasn't expecting him to come along so quickly. They did a good job."

Kelly was taken into hospital but was released the following afternoon without any problems.
