DAVID Chaytor MP (Letters, October 31) does not answer my question which was: is he in favour of means-testing?
Yes, I do believe that the wealthy members of society should receive the same pension as I do. The reason being that if we had a truly progressive tax system they would pay it back and that money would be available to pay decent pensions to the rest of the community.
As to his assertion that the winter fuel payment delivers ". . . a higher increase in weekly income than restoring the earnings link" I suggest he does his sums again. The winter fuel payment is £200 a year for a single pensioner plus £100 for any extra resident. That works out at £5.76 per week. If the link were restored we would get at least £23.55 for a single pensioner and £37. 65 for a couple.
And what evidence does he have that "five million British pensioners would not give up the pension tax credit"?
