On Sunday I attended the parade and wreath-laying at the war memorial outside Bury Parish Church where it was particularly pleasing to see so many young people taking part as members of organised groups.
The vast majority of these youngsters behaved splendidly and were a credit to the organisations they represented. Unfortunately a small number did not seem to have had the significance of the occasion explained to them and were in danger of letting the side down.
Some girls in front of me were laughing and talking during the two-minute silence. I noticed in particular a senior-looking Scout who had his hands thrust into his pockets, chewed gum, chatted with his mates and played with his mobile phone throughout the Last Post, two-minute silence and wreath-laying. All it needed was a quiet word in his ear from the Scout master, who was standing three feet away but, sadly, he did nothing.
