THE go-ahead to build a new church at Summerseat has been deferred after fears of a rift in the community.
Plans for the single-storey church, with a large stained glass window and steeple, prompted concerns among parents that classrooms would be overshadowed, Bury's planning control committee heard.
Parent Mike Banner said: "If the dimensions were reduced it would be in better proportion with the school. We are pleased that Summerseat is getting a new church, but would like the point to be taken on board."
Coun Bob Bibby said: "The people now have to get together to find a solution to the problem, which could split a community."
It was agreed to defer the decision until December 16.
