A HOSPITAL manager has been awarded a top accolade for saving the National Health Service a staggering £15 million a year, while at the same time improving patient care.

Now Mr David Scott's model is being adopted by hospitals across the country.

Two years ago Mr Scott (59), supplies manager at North Manchester General Hospital, started an in-house project to find the most effective, value-for-money equipment to improve the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. Through co-ordinated research into video endoscopy equipment for a new treatment room, his team saved the trust £140,000.

He is now putting together purchasing guidance for hospital trusts across the country which could save the NHS £15 million, which would be invested in other areas of patient care.

Mr Scott became the first ever NHS manager to be awarded Purchasing and Supply Management Professional of the Year Award. He also received Best Local Public Sector Project Award at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supplies annual dinner in London.
