TWO adventurers stopped a fund-raising climbing challenge to rescue a party of elderly people stranded on a Welsh mountain.

The 12-strong team from the line training flight section at RAF Cosford set out on The Welsh 3000 -- a 15 peaks walk -- to raise funds for Wigan and Leigh Hospice at Hindley.

The event was organised by volunteer Chris Hinchcliffe, of Hindley, and Culcheth's Neil Beddard who this week handed over a cheque for £1,000 to the hospice.

The pair completed eight of the 15 peaks, as they had to stop on the first day to rescue four people stranded on Snowdonia.

Chris said: "We rescued them by practically carrying them up a hill to safety. They were very distressed at the time but have since written to us to say they are all okay and to thank us."

Hospice appeals officer Margaret Ainscow said: "The whole experience was an adventure, and very memorable. Even though they didn't complete the 15 peaks, their sponsors still gave them the money promised for Wigan and Leigh Hospice -- in light of their heroism!"
