BLACKBURN Rovers star Dwight Yorke teamed up with a star of children's television to light up the sky last night and kick start Christmas.

The Ewood hit-man delighted the crowds when he pulled the switch to turn on Blackburn's festive lights.

Dwight was given a helping hand by Enjie Benjy, the blue-haired star of his own CiTV show, and there was even a personal appearance by Santa Claus.

A giant firework display was cheered by several hundred people, who had been entertained by the Blackburn People's Choir and dancers from Jumpin' Jacks nightclub.

Last night's festivities marked the beginning of the Christmas season in the town and the beginning of Blackburn's late night shopping hours.

Haslingden Brass Band was also on hand and kept the spirit alive with a selection of seasonal favourites. The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Coun Mike Barrett, also gave his support to the evening. He said: "It was marvellous that so many people came into the town centre.

"The lights are fantastic and I hope everyone comes into town to have a look and do their shopping."

The evening was organised by the council, which has also promised a festive spectacular for Darwen on November 29. A firework display billed as the town's biggest ever plus choirs, bands and a traditional street market is planned.
