COUNCILLOR Roy Walker (Letters, November 11) is right to report that First Bus and Rossendale Transport have unilaterally decided to suspend their bus services routing along Moss Street and Silver Street in Bury.

What he didn't say was that the bus companies were consulted on the environmental improvement scheme at the design stage and they did not raise any concerns until after the scheme was constructed. It was only then that they decided, without discussing matters with the council, to pull buses off this route.

The present position is this. Officers of the council have met with the Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) and the bus companies suggesting modifications to the speed reduction tables on Silver Street. However, before spending money on modifications, we need assurances from the bus companies that they will reinstate these suspended routes. We await their positive response.

COUN STELLA SMITH,

executive member,

environment and transport.
