A 15-YEAR-OLD girl was taken to hospital with serious leg and head injuries after being hit by a car which failed to stop.

Shortly after the incident, which happened at 2.32am yesterday the car was found outside an address in Nelson and four Kurdish men were arrested.

Police said the girl had just got out of a car and was crossing Walverden Road, Nelson, when she was hit.

She was due to undergo surgery today at Burnley General Hospital.

Sergeant Martin Bishop, of Colne Road Traffic police, appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

He said: "This was a serious accident which left the girl with serious injuries.

"As a result, four Kurdish citizens from various addresses in England were taken to Burnley, where they are undergoing interviews.

"We would appeal for any witnesses who saw a G registered Renault Five in the immediate proximity at the time of the accident to come forward."
