IT may only be June but Christmas could be cancelled this year in some parts of Pendle, if councillors approve plans to pull the plug on Christmas decorations.

On Wednesday, the Colne and District Committee will meet to discuss the provisions for this year's festivities.

And it looks like Christmas in some Colne streets could be the season to be miserable.

For a report to the council calls for the tradition of placing trees and lights on shop fronts to be stopped after the failure of the scheme in previous years.

It says the council normally pays for the supply and installation of the decorations in 60 shops in Albert Road, Church Street, Keighley Road and Lidgett, with the electricity supply coming from the shops.

Last year the council sent a letter asking shopkeepers to switch on the lights on the five-foot trees between 3.30pm and 11pm by using a plug-in-clock supplied by them.

However, because of last year's failure, when two third of the shops remained in darkness, it is proposed to axe the plan this year which would cost £24,000.

The council has already looked at the possibility of an alternative electricity source for the trees, but the report says this would be too expensive and require extensive legal permission, meaning if shop owners want to have decorations on their shops they will have to fund it themselves.

However the trees placed on the Health Centre and Whittakers' will not be affected as they already use highway electricity supplies and there are no other decorations in this part of Colne.
