FIREFIGHTERS are warning people of the dangers of leaving battery chargers unattended for too long following a house fire in Rossendale.

The fire started in the bedroom of a house in Park Street, Haslingden, after a drill was left to charge in a wardrobe.

Items fell on the charger starting the fire which damaged the bedroom and caused smoked damage to the rest of the building.

Crews from Haslingden and Rawtenstall attended the blaze at just after 8pm on Saturday, where it was discovered the house had no smoke alarm fitted.

Leading Firefighter Trevor Ashwell, said houses should have smoke alarms fitted which the brigade provide free of charge.

He said: "People should not leave charging batteries unattended for too long as they can be dangerous.

Also people should fit smoke alarms to their property and once fitted carry out regular checks of them."
