I HAVE been utterly shocked, dismayed and angered at the resignation of the six Labour councillors.
The local and the European elections have delivered enough shocks to be endured, only to be followed by irrational, questionable and ill-motivated resignations which can not only lead to political volatility in the council, but has the effect of tainting the democratic process which allowed them to be elected in the first place.
One aspect of these resignations I find extremely puzzling and difficult to comprehend is how they suddenly decided that they have shifted their political polarisation from Labour to Independent or have they suddenly forgotten that they were elected under the Labour umbrella?
The constituents who voted for them wanted a Labour councillor to represent them and I am sure if they wanted an independent councillor they would have voted for one.
On this basis one can only conclude that the wishes of the electorate do not count for anything in the minds of the said councillors and I do sincerely hope that the Asian community wakes up and condemns these self motivated resignations.
If certain councillors have not been offered places on the executive committee of the council there are other means and forms to address that, attempting to hold the council to ransom is certainly not one of the means. Otherwise each cabinet reshuffle at central government level would lead to tyrannical results.
