WORK to improve safety at a notorious accident blackspot starts next month.

A stretch of the A671 Whalley Road near Read, known locally as Devil's Elbow, will be closed for two months.

In the past five years, five serious accidents have been reported at the site. And in December - since the most recent statistics were compiled - a 26-year-old man, from Ramsbottom, died in a crash.

The works will see the existing 50mph speed limit reduced to 40mph, while a state-of-the-art skid-resistant road surface will be installed.

The road shuts on Monday, July 19, until September, from Portland Bar to the entrance to Read. Diversions will be posted through Clayton-le-Moors and Sabden.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "The road will be closed for about seven weeks. A clear alternative route will be signposted."
