WHILST recognising that the UKIP did better than expected in the Elections to the European Parliament I find the reaction to their additional seats to be over the top.
With proportional voting, people have the chance to vote positively for what they want. By voting UKIP a large number of people indicated that they want to leave the EU. (It is good that they had this opportunity but it does not mean that we all agree with them).
However, in the North West region, an equally large number of people voted Liberal Democrat, which has a policy of being positive about Europe.
What the election has shown is not that we should get out of Europe but that the major parties have to face up to the implications of Europe and not continue to hope that the issues will resolve themselves.
