MYSTERY still surrounds the deaths of a woman and her boyfriend.

The body of the woman was discovered in the heavily blood-stained front passenger seat of a car parked in a quiet lane alongside Leigh Cemetery. She had been stabbed in the neck.

As detectives prepared to launch a murder investigation, they broke into a nearby flat and found the body of the dead woman's partner.

Now police say they are not searching for anyone else in connection with last Wednesday night's incident.

The dead couple, both from Zimbabwe, shared a flat together in Warwick Street, Leigh - less than half a mile from where the woman's body was found in a Rover car parked in Lodge Lane, a single-track road opposite The Boundary pub on Manchester Road.

The couple have been named as Nyaria Nymatanga, aged 22, who was believed disabled, and 30-years-old Leon Katina. It is thought they had lived in Britain for about two years.

The gruesome discovery was made by a local family who were walking their dog along Lodge Lane at about 7.20pm. They saw the blood-covered body of a woman slumped in the front passenger seat of a Rover car and raised the alarm.

The lane was cordoned off by police as investigations began. Items in Ms Nymatanga's purse led them to an address in Warwick Street on the housing estate opposite Leigh Cemetery and after breaking in officers found her boyfriend's body in the flat which backs onto the Bridgewater Canal. It is believed he had hung himself.

Witnesses report they saw the car parked in Lodge Lane last Wednesday at about 2pm with the couple inside and in the place where it was later found. There is also a report of a man 'rushing' along Manchester Road close to the scene about an hour later.
