THE A671 Whalley Road is due to be closed during July and August so that traffic safety measures can take place. The bridge at Devil's Elbow is to be strengthened, the adverse camber -- which has been the cause of many accidents -- will be improved and covered with a skid resistant surface.

The road is due to be closed on July 19 until early September from Portland Bar to the entrance to Read. Diversions will be sign posted through Clayton le Moors and Sabden. However, the proposed road works are vital due to the high accident and death rate.

PADIHAM'S Mayor, Coun Mark Jinkinson, and the Mayoress, his wife Denise, attended the hugely popular Brass in the Parks 2004 event, held in Memorial Park.

Music was provided by tBurnley Junior Alliance Band who were warmly applauded for their performance.

A LANCASHIRE County Council trailer was present on the White Horse car park on Tuesday. Its purpose was to provide information on the Building Schools for the Future project which will affect every secondary school in Burnley, including Gawthorpe High School.

County council officers were present in the trailer to answer many of the questions Padiham parents posed and to try to allay their fears over the disruption to their children's education.

Gawthorpe High School will be used as the location for one of the new schools. Currently referred to as Site B, it will be renamed when the new school opens.

LONDON'S newsagents have joined in with the 'florification' of Hapton by putting hanging baskets outside their shop. They have also offered to pay for 15 more baskets to be placed around the village. Parish clerk Jo Garrigan is to meet with Jill from London's to discuss their generous offer.
