TOTTINGTON St Johns had in-form all-rounder Russell Brooks to thank for two emphatic victories over the weekend; meaning things have become closer at the top of Division One.

On Saturday, they travelled to Failsworth Macedonia and were asked to field first by home captain Rigney.

At first this proved to be a good decision when Failsworth reached 70 for the loss of two wickets.

However, the customary tight bowling from the Tottington bowlers put the brakes on and forced two Failsworth run-outs.

Bowling hero Paul Skundric was brought into the attack and bowled a consistent line and length; with his first nine overs costing just 17 runs.

The breakthrough came in his tenth over when he bowled Daly for 21.

In the next six overs, he proceeded to take a further four wickets and removed Failsworth's last wicket with the score on 150 and Skundric finished with final figures of 5-60.

In reply, the Saints lost opener Hudson early on but up stepped Russell Brooks to dominate the Failsworth bowling on his way to 65 in just 14 overs.

He was ably supported by opener Kieron Coe (62*) and it was he and Neil Butterworth (22*) who took the score past the Macedonia total in just 29 overs.

On Sunday, it was a similar story when local rivals Elton Vale visited Crompton Meadows; however this time Brooks starred with the bat and ball.

In a reduced encounter of 35 overs each, Elton Vale got off to a flying start with 79 in twelve overs without loss.

However, Brooks, with his brand of left arm spin, captured five Elton wickets from twelve overs for just 40 runs to set his side up for victory.

Further impressive bowling from Skundric and latterly Meehan restricted Elton Vale to 144-9 at tea.

Like the previous day, Tottington lost their opener early doors but again Brooks took the attack to the opposition with some huge blows.

He passed fifty without breaking sweat and, with partner Ashley Parkinson (42*), they passed the visitors total in just 22 overs; Brooks finishing with 94* to complete an outstanding weekend.
