THE man known as "Mr Tottington" is to be made an honorary freeman of the borough.

Mr Bill Johnson stood down at the local elections after 44 years as a councillor, during which he was twice mayor of the metropolitan borough and twice chairman of the former Tottington Urban District Council. He has also been made an MBE.

The move to make him an honorary freeman was announced at the annual meeting of Bury Council on Wednesday (June 23), but it has to be formally agreed by the council at a later date -- perhaps at its next meeting in July.

The honour has been bestowed on only one other person, the late Labour councillor David Davies, since the borough came into being in 1974.
