A PUB landlord has been warned after complaints about loud music, rowdy regulars -- and even noisy quiz nights!

Thurston Sergeant, who runs the Good Samaritan pub in Peel Brow, Ramsbottom, was reported to Bury Council for "nuisance and disturbance to neighbours".

As well as turning down his music, Mr Sergeant is now thinking of ways to quieten quiz night organiser Bill Sinnet.

Bury Council's senior environmental health officer, Stuart Bryan, has warned the pub could be monitored and a noise abatement order issued if further complaints are made.

A complaint was made to the local authority by neighbours Chris and Joanne Whitworth, who alleged frequent nuisance and disturbance from amplified music, in addition to loud talking on weekly quiz nights.

"I am absolutely gobsmacked," said Mr Sergeant, who has run the pub for the last two-and-half years. "I thought it was a joke when I received a formal letter warning me about complaints about talking."

He joked: "In future I will be asking Bill to whisper -- or get him to mime the questions!"

Mr and Mrs Whitworth have lived next door to the Good Samaritan for the last three years and, in their complaint, claim the noise level emanating from the pub on its Wednesday quiz nights is affecting their quality of life. They have declined to comment to the Bury Times.

However, Mr Sergeant claims the couple have made a series of complaints, leading him to scrap pub karaoke nights and live singers.

He said: "All I am trying to do is make a success of the pub."

Mr Bryan said it would be up to the courts to impose a noise abatement order against the Good Samaritan if any future monitoring was to support the Whitworths' grievance."
