VISITORS to the Weavers Cottage Heritage Centre will be able to get a taste of history during the school holidays.

The Weavers Cottage, in Fall Barn Fold, Rawtenstall, is one of the finest remaining examples of a purpose-built 18th century loom shop.

The premises were first occupied in the late 1700s by Richard Ashworth, baize manufacturer. The building later became two, and four separate dwellings at one point.

Rossendale Civic Trust formed from the amalgamation of Haslingden Civic Trust and Rawtenstall Civic Society.

Together the organisations have worked to guide planning and development in the Valley since 1965.

The cottage narrowly escaped demolition before being saved for posterity by the then Rawtenstall Civic Society.

The cottage operates as an information and heritage centre for the history and traditions of Rossendale.

Members of the trust run the cottage on a voluntary basis. Facilities include a local heritage gallery, a display of industrial machinery with demonstrations of of traditional skills and small souvenir and book shop.

There is also a meeting room, with a small coffee shop, which is available for hire. The cottage is open weekends and Bank Holidays from April until September or by special arrangement. For more information contact 01706 229828.
