BLACKBURN Rovers are lining up a move for Nigerian international striker Peter Odemwingie.

The 23-year-old is due to arrive at Brockhall today for a second trial, after impressing during his first one 10 days ago.

Rovers have already told his Belgian club La Louviere how much they would offer if they wanted to sign the forward, who broke into the Super Eagles for the 2002 World Cup.

Although he didn't play in Japan, Odemwingie became the surprise sensation of this year's African Cup of Nations this year when he sprang from the bench to score twice in a 4-0 win over South Africa.

He was rated as Nigeria's most dangerous player in their run to the semi-finals, but his tournament ended in despair when he missed a penalty in the shoot-out defeat to host country Tunisia.

Odemwingie has also enjoyed success on the domestic front, winning the Belgian Cup and scoring against Benfica in their UEFA Cup defeat to them last season.

Roevrs chief executive John WiIliams said: "Peter came over and he's certainly done enough for us to want to see him again.

"We've not been able to watch him in games because trialists aren't even allowed to play in reserve games and tomorrow's at Sunderland would have been ideal.

"So we haven't seen him play nearly as much as we would have liked and we can't afford to make mistakes, so the next best thing is to bring him back to Brockhall.

"We've made an indicative offer to his club, subject to him impressing sufficiently in his second trial. But there's not been any conversation about personal terms, it's just a continuation to judge him."

Odemwingie, who was brought up in Russia, would require a work permit if he does enough to convince manager Graeme Souness he would be a welcome addition to the squad.

He was scheduled to arrive in England today to give Rovers a couple of days to assess him before they travel to Southampton on Friday.

Blackburn's first Premiership away game of the season at St Mary's Stadium will kick off at 12.30pm on Saturday because of Sky television coverage.

Striker Paul Dickov should be fit to join the squad despite his withdrawal from the Scotland squad for their friendly with Hungary at Hampden Park tomorrow.

The 31-year-old came on for his Rovers debut in the second half of Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to West Brom but was suffering from a niggling Achilles injury before the game.

After being assessed by the Scottish doctor it was agreed that he should return to his club for treatment.

Also on the international front, Jonathan Stead is in line for his third England Under 21s cap tonight.

The Rovers striker has earned a call-up to Peter Taylor's 26-man squad to take on the Ukraine at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium, the venue of his first Premiership goal back in February.
