PUPILS in Pendle will be the first to road test new specially designed road safety footwear to help stamp out child casualties on the country's highways.

Lancashire Constabulary has joined forces with Bacup-based Courtesy Shoes to develop a range of road safety themed footwear, complete with zebra stripes and flashing traffic lights, to help raise awareness of road safety among children.

The innovative project has won the backing of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), whose crest will appear on the shoe boxes which will also contain a child friendly version of the highway code.

The launch is taking place at Primet Primary School, Tatton Street, Colne, today.

A special school assembly was due to be held where pupils will be given a talk on road safety from local police officers.

Julie Parsons, the mother of a young girl killed in a traffic accident near to the school was also due to attend.
