NEW plans to turn a Ramsbottom quarry into a landfill site have been submitted to Bury Council.

Under a revised proposal, Fletcher Bank in Shuttleworth would be visited by 290 lorries each day.

The applicants, Peel Investments and Marshalls Mono, want to infill the quarry with 180,000 tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste every year.

If the plans are approved, an additional 100,000 tonnes of mixed waste will be transported to the site annually.

This would be separated into both recyclable materials and residue that will be deposited on site.

About 20,000 tonnes of green waste would also be brought to the site for open-air composting.

And in a fourth part of the plan, excavation operations would be extended on to 4.5 hectares of grazing land within Rossendale.

Permission is being sought for a period of seven to ten years.

In March 2002, councillors unanimously rejected proposals to use the quarry for landfill following a protest campaign by the action group Ramsbottom Against Landfill. However, proposals for special waste, including contaminants, to be deposited at the site have now been scrapped.

The matter will be decided jointly by Bury Council and Lancashire County Council, which has jurisdiction over part of the site.

Planning officer Mohammad Sadiq said: "The application has only just been registered and we shall be consulting residents as soon as possible. We shall also consult with our own experts, including traffic and environmental health.

"Given the response to the last application, we are anticipating some objections but this application has been scaled down and certain elements softened."

No date has yet been set for any decision.
