A HOME for the mentally handicapped was saved after plans to change it into bed and breakfast accommodation were refused.

Traffic and safety fears meant Ribble Valley planning committee was against the recommendations for the house on Whalley Road, Clitheroe.

Coun Frank Dyson said: "This change of use would be a regrettable development."

The group care home had been looking after up to six people at a time since 1984.

A BLACKBURN firm celebrated after they escaped a company takeover which threatened jobs.

Bosses and employees at Silicone Engineering won the battle to stop their parent company, Bestobell being bought out by BTR industries group.

Managing director Bryan Rostron had been bitterly opposed to the plans. He said: "We are absolutely over the moon. This is the best thing that could have happened."

BLACKBURN'S pig bins were removed after becoming surplus to requirements.

The 550 bins were placed in different parts of the town centre after direction from the ministry.

But were taken away after the kitchen waste they gathered for pig suppliers was no longer needed.

The pig farms could freely get their hands on feed after controls were relaxed after the war.
