A WOMAN managed to put out a fire in her house after an arsonist pushed burning paper through her letter box while she was asleep.

The 27-year-old woman was woken by the sound of her letter box slamming shut after the firebug forced a lit cigarette packet through her door at her home on Cambridge Close, Whitefield, at around 11.50pm on Sunday night. The woman managed to dowse the flames with water.

A police spokesman said: "Thankfully, in this case, the victim was woken by the sound of her letter box slamming shut then her smoke alarm activating."
